Blank Screen Help

Hello Nintendo fans, I'm having an issue with my nintendo 64 console and my memory. I like many of yous played the nintendo 64 relentlessly in my younger days. Recently I have had an urge to play some of the greatest classics in history and I have successfully found my 64. However, I have no games and cannot determine if my nintendo 64 unit is working or not. I would like to fully ensure that it is working before I invest in buying and building a collection of games. My Question Sums up to the following:

"If no games are inserted, and everything is wired correctly will any sort of menu/logo appear or will the screen simply stay blank." I realize certain people would consider this a stupid question however it has been about 10 years since I have played with my nintendo 64 and cannot remember what happens if no games are inserted in the slot. The red light appears indicating everything should be working correctly however the screen stays blank. I think my T.V is set up to the right channel. Hopefully someone will take the time to answer this question and save me countless hours or reasoning.

It needs a game in it for the system to boot up. There is no menu screen or anything like that.
