World's First USB SNES Cartridge Reader
Hi everyone,
I hereby announce (to the best of my knowledge) the first-ever USB reader for Super Nintendo/Famicom cartridges! Instead of downloading pirated r0mz from Russian w4rez/pr0n sites, you can now show the world how cool you are by plugging real game cartridges into your laptop or smartphone :-) Both hardware and firmware need a lot more work, but only a few minutes ago, I achieved the major breakthrough: being able to play Super Mario World on my laptop (using Snes9x) -- straight from the cartridge!
The reader appears to the host as a read-only USB Mass Storage Device with a single file (the ROM file) in the root directory of a FAT16 file system. It should work on most post-2000 systems without special drivers...
Parts: about US$ 25 from Digi-Key. (actually, at the moment I am working with a development kit which was a bit more expensive but also has a lot of useless crap on it)
More facts and images/videos to follow in the next weeks. In the long term (say, 3-6 months) I am thinking about making a small batch of kits, so if you want to stay informed, just send me a quick PM and I'll set up a mailing list. Until then, anyone may help improve the reader by donating their least favorite game cartridges for development and testing :-)
Stay tuned,
Matthias_H
